The
core integrating factor for NASC is the
Gaeltacht. Each of the NASC partners is
responsible for the development of,
or the provision of services in and to,
counties that include Gaeltacht areas.
The
partnership embraces a broad spectrum
of interests and responsibilities, including
economic, social and cultural development;
community, local and rural development;
third level education and research; and
municipal functions such as housing, road
transportation, sanitary services, spatial
planning, environmental protection, and
recreation and amenities.
The
partnership seeks to promote the integrated
and sustainable development of the areas
for which the partners are responsible
through effectively utilising all available
resources and expertise, including external
resources and expertise made available
in the context of European Union membership.
| Integrated
development means a more coordinated approach
by NASC partners in delivering their individual
programmes. It is also a matter of taking
joint initiatives where these represent
the most effective or efficient option.
An important dimension of NASC is the optimal
integration of NUI Galway as a partner in
the development processes at local and regional
levels to which all NASC partners are committed.
The
partners recognise that the European dimension
is becoming increasingly important in
determining the future development of
their areas. The NASC initiative is a
key element in their response to that
reality and one which aims to complement
the individual efforts of the partners
at local, regional, national and European
levels.
The
development of closer links with the institutions
of the European Union and other regions
of Europe promotes the Europeanisation
of the partners' functions and activities
and thereby contributes to furthering
the development of the areas that they
serve.
